Private 2703/20058 Stanley Turton

1st/4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment

Stanley Turton was born in Lincoln in 1895. In the 1871 census his grandfather in Lincoln is listed as being a Lay vicar.

The 1901 census shows the family living in Lincolnshire but by the time of the 1911 census Stanley was living at 77 Wavendon Avenue with his father Alfred, a clerk to a leather manufacturer, his mother Ellen and a domestic servant. In the 1911 census he is listed as being 16 years old and still at school. He was an only child born after 5 years of marriage.

Stanley enlisted in Luton in the 1st/4th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. The battalion was sent from Marseilles to Egypt in January 1916 but the following month, after just a few days in Egypt, the battalion was sent back to France. According to military records Stanley was killed in action on 27th February 1917. The exact circumstances of his death are not known but the date suggests it was during operations on the Ancre during the Somme offensives. Stanley is buried at Fonquevillers Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. According to information on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, at the time of death, his parents address is given as ‘’Southcoombe’’, 40 Christchurch Rd, Bournemouth.

A notice of Stanley’s death was placed in the Chiswick Times on 9th March 1917 and he was mentioned during Holy Communion at St Michael’s Church on 11th March and listed in ‘Beyond the Veil’ in the April 1917 edition of the Parish Magazine.
