Rifleman 4407 John Paterson Malcolm

1st/16th London Regiment, Queen’s Westminster Rifles

John Paterson Malcolm was born in Scotland on 22nd January 1897 to George and Martha Paterson. At the time of his birth the family lived at 102 George Street, Whiteinch, Partick, Lanarkshire. The family were quite mobile and the 1901 and 1911 census returns show the family living in Cheetham, Manchester where John’s father is recorded as an engraver at a calico printers. John himself is listed in 1911 as a clerk in a shipping warehouse. John had four brothers: George b1895, James b1901, Leonard b1902 and Robert b1906.

It is unclear when the family moved to Chiswick but the January 1916, March 1916 and June 1916 editions of the Parish Magazine note that John is ‘at home’ (probably undergoing military training). His address is given as 18 Hazeldene Road, Chiswick.

John was listed as missing in the September/October 1916 edition of the Parish Magazine. Sadly it transpired that Rifleman 4407 John Paterson Malcolm, Westminster Rifles was one of the many who fell at Gommecourt, on the first day of the Somme, 1st July 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial. One can only guess at the anguish his family must have felt when he was missing and how awful to learn that he was one of so many young men who lost their lives on that fateful 1st of July 1916.

Electoral rolls indicate that the family continued to live at Hazeldene Road for some years. In 1921 George and Martha are resident there with their son James and by 1930 Robert’s name was also added to the electoral roll.
